I’ve know D since he was 9 years old. We both were goofy looking, with huge glasses, and awkward gaps in our mouths. Fast forward 21 years and D’s my partner in crime. We’ve also outgrown our goofy looks, huge glasses, and awkward gaps in our mouths! Thank goodness. Haha.

For his 30th birthday, D wanted to take a little trip down to Williamsburg. (I think you already know our infatuation with Virginia – as seen here and here.) The beauty of living in DC, there are lots of places to visit within a 3 hour radius. Williamsburg is one of those options! It’s full of history – like Yorktown, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg. There are plenty of wineries on the way down – our favorite is Williamsburg Winery. There’s an awesome meadery now (Silver Hand Meadery), and if you like beer, you can take a tour of AleWerks brewery.

On this last trip we did a little bit of everything, AND whole lot of drinking. I mean, how else are we going to celebrate a dirty 30? Hehe. Highlights

• Shorty’s Diner – D and I like casual dining. When we’re home in DC our favorite spot is a diner. So it’s only fitting that we try to find the best diner’s in town. We picked Shorty’s Diner based on some research (Yelp and TripAdvisor). It seemed like a local favorite. The prices are great, the food is delicious, and the staff were super friendly. I’d go back again.
• AleWerks Brewing Company – You like brews? You like ales? Come visit this place! Our guide, Charlotte was great. It’s a smaller brewery, but don’t let that dishearten you. Stop by and drink from their large list of ales. Our favorites were Bitter Valentine and Coffeehouse Stout.
• Yorktown Battlefield – This is part of the Colonial National Park – which includes Jamestown. It’s also the one part of the historic triangle that we had not seen. It’s mostly a driving tour, with a visitors’ center and museum. You can walk around but it started to rain on us that day. You get to see the earthworks used to take over Yorktown from Cornwallis as well as the fallen rebounds overtaken by the revolutionaries and Frenchmen. If you like history (which we do, of course), stop by for the day.
• Silver Hand Meadery – So we confess. We’ve never had mead before. Of all the tours we lined up for this trip, this was the most anticipated. It started off with an introduction to honey. The flavors and smells from honey varies greatly and depends on the type of flowers bees use to make honey. Those accents can transpire to mead as well. We liked it so much we bought a few bottles to take home. Mead party anyone?
• The Cheese Shop – This is right in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg area. We stopped by for lunch to grab a couple sandwiches. They were sooo good. Don’t forget to ask for the house dressing. But that’s not all, they also have a wide variety of cheeses and crackers and olive oils and vinegars. It’s like a Dean and Deluca!!!(They also have a wine cellar downstairs!!!)
• Ducks Donuts – The skinny – this place makes fresh donuts that you can top with whatever you want. Maple frosting. Strawberry frosting. Glazed. Cinnamon Sugar. Bacon. Sprinkles. Coconut. Nuts. You name it. They make it.
